East Asia, Japan, late Edo to early Meiji Period, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden zushi shrine covered in gold gilding. Within the articulated doors is a wooden figure of Buddha seated atop a lotus throne adorned with a stepped mandorla below. Size of shrine (doors shut): 5" L x 4" W x 12.5" H (12.7 cm x 10.2 cm x 31.8 cm); open doors: 11.75" L (29.8 cm); Buddha: 3.5" L x 4.5" H (8.9 cm x 11.4 cm)

Condition
Fading and losses to gilding. Top of shrine is repaired; front rim is glued on with visible break line on the top. Front wood pillars are reattached at the top with adhesive, not easily discernable. Chip and loss to the Buddha's top of head. Some chips to black lacquer surface on exterior of shrine. Overall good condition.
