Description
The son of a printer, Jules graduated in literature at the age of 21 and became professor of history and ethics at the Collège de France. His lectures caused a scandal because of their anti-clericalism and open liberalism. They were suspended several times. Autograph letter signed "J. Michelet" to a friend, June 2, 1860, 4 p. in-8°. Attached an autograph manuscript signed 1 p. 3/4 in-8°, entitled: "L'Homme est-il nécessaire?" and an autograph letter signed by Ms. Michelet. Interesting letter, where he quotes Chateaubriand, relating to the variations that time brings to the subject of judgment on writers. "L'Homme n'eût pas vécu sons l'oiseau... Mais l'oiseau eut vêcu sans l’homme…” Included: Autograph letter signed 4 pp. in-16.
