Item Details
Description
**First Time At Auction**

South America, Bolivia, Aymara peoples, ca. 19th century CE. A set of 12 hand-carved stone camelid fetish figurines, some carved from alabaster, each exhibiting a minimalist mammalian form. Some of the fetishes feature spiraling horns like a ram while others exhibit curved horns like a bull, and others still without horns bear more of an alpaca or llama form. Figurines like these were used like ancient Inca canopa vessels in that they were buried near or beneath the animals' pens to help protect them and increase their fertility. Size: 2.33" L x 0.79" W x 1.84" H (5.9 cm x 2 cm x 4.7 cm)

Provenance: private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, USA, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000
