Pre-Columbian, Western Bolivia, Chiribaya or Tiahuanaco (Tiwanaku) culture, ca. 900 to 1200 CE. An attractive, hand-built pottery bowl with a flat base, gradually-expanding walls, a deep basin, and a rolled rim. An exterior register of alternating maroon and grey rectangles encircles the base, and the rim is traced in black pigment. The interior basin displays a register of abstract geometric/zoomorphic figures with tendril-form appendages and circular eyes, and the earth tone palette is presented atop a pale orange ground. Size: 6.25" W x 3" H (15.9 cm x 7.6 cm).
Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

Condition
Bowl repaired from multiple pieces with small chips, some overpainting, and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor nicks to base, walls, and rim, with fading to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits throughout.
