Description
Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fine example of Colima pottery, simple yet elegant in style, rich in symbolic iconography, and boasting sublime technique! An evocative redware vessel depicting a shaman in a crazed expression with wide eyes and a broad smile as he dramatically curves both arms upward to place his hands on his head, resting on either side of his prominent shaman's crest. Leaning forward as though enraptured in the moment, the figure sits with upraised knees, legs folded to his chest, as his arched back opens up to the deep basin of the vessel. White-painted designs adorn the burnished red surface of his face, body, and the jar, intensifying the piece's already energetic presentation. His stance and arched back suggest he may be a hunchback; in Pre-Columbian times, the deformities of hunchbacked figures were believed to be signs that these individuals were in fact special, chosen individuals who were touched by the supernatural. Size: 11.6" L x 8.7" W x 10.6" H (29.5 cm x 22.1 cm x 26.9 cm)
