Description
Good size early 19th century Tibetan thangka in original mounts depicting 6-armed Bhuddist dharmapala Hayagriva easily recognizable by 3 horse heads in his crown. He is considered to be the terrific form of Avalokiteshvara and thus the archetype of fierce compassion. Hayagriva is shown wearing a tiger skin apron and a long necklace of human heads, holding various implements in his hands. Hayagriva’s special ability is to cure diseases, especially skin diseases even as serious as leprosy, which is said to be caused by nagas (snakes), so he is shown trampling on numerous serpents. Depicted above him is the great 14th century Tibetan teacher Tsongkhapa with two disciples recognizable by their Gelugpa sect yellow hats, and White Tara, Begtse and Green Tara below. Inscribed in Tibetan on the back - see the detail on Enlargement 6. Beautifully painted with natural mineral pigments on cotton, excellent quality painting, some expected wear, overall in great condition for a 200 years old devotional painting. Comes from old Washington DC collection. Painting size 22 x 17 inches (55 x 42 cm), mounts 41 x 23 inches (104 x 59 cm).
