Native American / First Nations, Northern United States / Canada, Great Lakes Region, Cree / Ojibwe, ca. late 20th century CE; Southwestern United States / Hawaii, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A goose twig decoy standing on 3 tripodal legs, woven using tamarack (larch) twigs and cotton threads, and a palm husk basket woven from curved vines / branches and rattan with a thick husk from coconut palm fibers. Tamarack geese, crafted from twigs, serve as symbolic birds traditionally fashioned by the Cree community for use as decoys in hunts. Constructed by assembling small twigs from the Tamarack larch tree, the bird also has a wonderful pine-like fragrance- that can be revived by boiling the bird. The opening in the decoy's head, when placed against the snow, is intended to represent the white patch on the side of a Canada Goose's head. The Palm basket is handmade, possibly from Hawaii or the Southern USA. It is the perfect size for holding the goose, although they were collected at separate times. Goose's neck is repaired with visible adhesive reattaching the head. A few losses to twigs throughout. Nice scent from the Tamarack twigs! Palm basket has some wear, but otherwise intact.
