Northwestern Europe, England, ca. late 19th century CE. A beautiful pair of brass candlesticks with a beehive shape to the stems and faceted knobs. The shaft rests on a footed square base with clipped corners, both are stamped "ENGLAND / RD223580." Under the base and inside the stem is a button on rod known as a "pusher" that would have helped eject wax from spent candles. The beehive style was popular in England and the United States in the 19th century. Besides the obvious connection of bee's wax in candles, the beehive shape was symbolic of society and social hierarchy. The Victorian era was thought to be a time of orderly and regimented industry, and Queen Victoria was the symbolic queen bee of the hive. These candlesticks are an elegant nod towards this metaphor. Wear to the surface with areas of dark patina. Remains of wax in the socket from use. Good condition. Pusher for wax removal does not function.
