Native American Southwestern United States, Navajo (Dine), ca. mid to late 20th century CE; Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A collection of 3 Southwestern textiles: A small wool Navajo sampler rug, a Sunday saddle blanket, and a large Zapotec Mexican wool rug. The midsized and colorful purple panel is a Navajo Sunday saddle blanket, made for the tourist trade in a dense and stiff weave that is perfect as a wall hanging. Before their manufacture for the tourist trade, saddle blankets decorated the precious horses, symbolizing the animal's significance in Navajo culture. The fancy blankets were dubbed "Sunday" blankets by European-Americans to denote their use on special occasions. Size of largest: 82" L x 49" W (208.3 cm x 124.5 cm); smallest rug: 22" L x 17" W (55.9 cm x 43.2 cm); saddle blanket w/ fringe: 31.5" L x 30.75" W (80 cm x 78.1 cm)

Condition

Smallest rug has pilling and wear to surface, but intact. Good used condition. Largest blanket has staining and dark discoloration on the orange areas. Encrusted stain, which could possibly be spot cleaned. Pilling to fibers, fair to good used condition. Midsized saddle blanket has a few minor stains and wear to surface, but great condition.
