Item Details
Description
A set of two ornately chased iron étui cases which at one time held wax for sealing letters and official documents. The cylindrical case has been decorated with floral imagery as well as a large coat of arms at its center, presumable belonging to the original owner of this case. There was once gilding throughout most of the piece though much of it has worn away. The second case is of an octagonal shape. At the top, it is decorated as if it has many small, draped curtains around its circumference. Towards the bottom are many small engravings which, when rotated, appear to show some sort of plant blooming and growing larger as each panel progresses.
Europe, 17th-18th century.
L: 3 1/2 in., (8.9 cm.)
Condition
Good overall with expected signs of use and wear. Some loss to gilding on armorial case. One hinge loop broken on other case, hinge still attached and functional.
