7 3/8 x 5 1/2 in. hand-colored albumen photograph on original 10 x 8 in. cardstock mount with penciled annotation on verso, which reads "Gen. Robert E. Lee & a piece of his uniform with flags painted by Mr. William Warren, grandfather of Mrs. Wayland Dunnaway (born Mary May)." Housed in period frame, 14 3/4 x 12 3/4 in. (Toning, some soiling, occasional spotting to print and mount, corners trimmed; wear to frame consistent with age and use.) Although uncredited, the image was originally taken in early 1864 by J. Vannerson of Richmond, VA.

The photograph is accompanied by a cloth fragment, approx. 1 3/8 x 2 1/4 in., adorned with crossed Second National Confederate flags against a gray background (staining, few holes, trimmed edges). No further provenance or documentation accompanies the lot indicating that the cloth fragment was originally part of General Lee's uniform.

HDS lists "Wayland Dunaway," a Confederate officer who served with Company F, 47th Virginia Infantry, as well as the 40th Virginia Infantry; however, it is unclear if this item is connected with the same Wayland Dunaway.
