Agriculture & Botany.- Virgilius Maro (Publius) The Georgicks of Virgil, translated and edited by John Martyn, 6 engraved botanical plates, of which 4 folding (1 hand-coloured and the others printed in colour and finished by hand), 4 folding engraved maps (Americas, World, Peloponnese, and celestial), 3 engraved plates (a classical winds compass and 2 ploughs), small piece torn from upper margin of title to remove part of an ownership inscription, occasional spotting or light staining, lightly browned, contemporary calf, spine in compartments and with leather label, head of spine chipped, joints splitting, but holding firm, corners little worn, rubbed and marked, [cf. Hunt 517], 8vo, Dublin, Printed for E.Exshaw, C. Wynne [& others], 1744. *** A handsomely produced edition of Virgil's work on agriculture, which is rare at auction. John Martyn was Professor of Botany at Cambridge University and a fellow of the Royal Society.
