Description
Homer Harris (NC), Beach Robin

Portsmouth Island, North Carolina, before 1900, carved and painted wood, twisted copper stake.

Harris was the father of Alvin Harris. He was also the brother of Henry Harris who made the famous Calvin Gaskill rig of shorebirds. Homer carved this fully rounded plump beach robin from 2.25 in. wood. The two piece body is joined by wood pegs and the twisted wire legs later inspired his son Alvin to use the same method when he carved his first rig of beach robins in 1912 at the age of eight.
Made from two pieces of wood joined by wooden pegs.
Purchased from Jay Bumpus, the husband of Evelyn "Clyde" Harris Bumpus, who was the daughter of Alvin Harris.
From the Personal Collection of Mr. Kroghie Andresen, Charlotte, North Carolina
