FOUR SPECTACLES
American, 19th to 20th century. One marked on the temples "Pure Coin" and "16 G. E. Cobb" with oval lenses and leather pin-on chatelain case circa 1880. One blue steel with oval lenses in case circa 1895. Another Oxford marked "1/10 - 12K G.F. Oxford" to the bridge, in hinged case circa 1925. The last with brass frame and oval lenses marked "K. Segitz" to one temple, in case.

From the collection of Dr. J. William Rosenthal, M.D.

Dr. Rosenthal was a well-known ophthalmologist, an expert on the history of spectacles and other visual aids, a renowned collector, an author, and a generous benefactor of many institutions. His father, Jonas W. Rosenthal, MD, is the namesake of the museum of ophthalmology at Tulane University. Optical devices from his collection can be found in over sixteen museums including the Museum of Vision of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
