Description
A pair of George III carved giltwood girandoles, after a design by Thomas Chippendale, c.1760, each shaped mirror plate within an asymmetrical frame of moulded acanthus scrolls, and issuing a flame finial, 48cm wide 94cm high (2) Provenance: The Collection of the late Rosemary and Theo Cutting. This lot was on long-term loan to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, until 2023. Exhibited early 2000s. The design for these girandoles is taken directly from 'Chippendale’s Director', an immensely popular source of design throughout England during the second half of the 18th century (Thomas Chippendale, 'The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director', 1762, 3rd ed., the design illustrated with related designs for 'Girandoles', pl. CLXXXVII).
