鼠置物以鐵為材，經過反覆鍛搥、延展，純化雜質才可成形。雕鑿老鼠造型，雙耳高聳，大眼炯炯有神，身軀飽滿，背部隆起，腿部粗壯肥碩，長尾曳地彎繞至身側，雙手似緊抓堅果，身旁另有一飽滿堅果。整體雕鑿主題明確，造型簡潔俐落，逼真傳神。

「打出」又稱鍛金，是用銅、鐵等金屬經千百次搥打而成形，透過搥打將金屬延展成極薄且厚度勻稱之片狀，再彎曲塑形。而在各類金屬中，鐵的熔點高，延展性又極低，其難度幾為金工之絕，每次搥打力道需精準拿捏處理，費工耗時，對匠人之功力考驗難度極大，傳世作品不多。本作出自知名鍛金家山田宗光，其在高熱的加工條件下，從材料展開到最後收口，運用擋金和鐵鎚不同形狀，相互交替搭配，以一塊無熔接的鐵片搥出鼠造型，甚為精巧雅致。而根據原共箱之題簽，可知本品後為山田宗光之子山田宗美所藏。

山田宗光，出生於江戶時代天保二年（1831 年），年少便遠赴江戶於明珍宗妙門下習藝，擅製盔甲，精鍛金，由於其才華卓越被許以明珍姓，並被認可為明珍加賀分派，成為明珍世家的一個支流。後由於明治維新面臨廢業危機，轉型製作象嵌金工。明治十四年（1881 年），於第二回內國勸業博覽會榮獲銀賞；明治二十六年（1893 年），於美國芝加哥萬國博覽會獲優等賞榮譽。

山田家譜可追溯的第一代為桃山時期慶長年間（1595-1614 年），於大聖寺城主山口玄藩之下以鍛造刀劍為業的山口家正，此後數代皆效命於大聖寺藩主，至江戶後期傳到第八代山田永世（1804-1871 年），此時已由原本製作實用武器轉變為裝飾性強的武具。第九代山田宗光更轉型為金工創作，第十代山田宗美傳承家學淵源，將金工發揮到極致，並獲帝室技藝員之榮譽。
