螳螂置物以鐵為材,質地堅實,採多組鐵件打出接合巧製而 成。螳螂頭頂一對長觸鬚後彎,複眼與尖嘴形成三角形頭 部,胸部長似脖頸。長翼扁平微彎翹,面刻明顯翅紋。圓腹 細長飾橫紋,腹下六足,前足尖刺齒狀似鍘刀的碩大刀臂, 中、後足前端飾 Y 形鉤爪。整體動態威武,頭、翼、肢皆可 活動,精雕細鑿,活靈活現。

螳螂,鮮活躍動,象徵興盛,於日本,其日文漢字爲「蟷 螂」,平假名「??????」,因動作敏捷,攻擊性強,廣受日 本武士喜愛,常用以自喻。螳螂前臂狀若日本兵器鎖鐮,鎖 鐮一端為鐮刀,中間連鐵鏈,另一端掛重錘。日本古代非武 士階級諸如忍者、野武士等不許配劍,故發明鎖鐮作武器。 此外,也因螳螂抬起前足之姿狀似祈禱,又稱「拝??虫」。 位於日本東京,以日本及東亞古美術品為主要收藏的私立美 術館「大倉集古館」,館藏一件江戶時代〈鐵自在螳螂置物〉 ,其與本品造型及製作工法神似,應屬同作者或同工 房之作,可資參考。
