螳螂置物以鐵為材，質地堅實，採多組鐵件打出接合巧製而成。螳螂頭頂一對長觸鬚後彎，複眼與尖嘴形成三角形頭部，胸部長似脖頸。長翼扁平微彎翹，面刻明顯翅紋。圓腹細長飾橫紋，腹下六足，前足尖刺齒狀似鍘刀的碩大刀臂，中、後足前端飾 Y 形鉤爪。整體動態威武，頭、翼、肢皆可活動，精雕細鑿，活靈活現。

螳螂，鮮活躍動，象徵興盛，於日本，其日文漢字爲「蟷螂」，平假名「??????」，因動作敏捷，攻擊性強，廣受日本武士喜愛，常用以自喻。螳螂前臂狀若日本兵器鎖鐮，鎖鐮一端為鐮刀，中間連鐵鏈，另一端掛重錘。日本古代非武士階級諸如忍者、野武士等不許配劍，故發明鎖鐮作武器。此外，也因螳螂抬起前足之姿狀似祈禱，又稱「拝??虫」。位於日本東京，以日本及東亞古美術品為主要收藏的私立美術館「大倉集古館」，館藏一件江戶時代〈鐵自在螳螂置物〉，其與本品造型及製作工法神似，應屬同作者或同工房之作，可資參考。
