Joe Louis (1914-1981) was the world heavyweight champion from 1937 to 1949. Nicknamed the "Brown Bomber", Louis was ranked as the 1 heavyweight of all-time by the International Boxing Research Organization in 2005. Louis also broke the color barrier in golf in 1952. Prior to the War, Louis won a widely publicized rematch with the German boxer Max Schmeling.
