Description
Poncho Balandran, 17th/18th C. Alpaca warp and weft. Natural dyes. Warp patterned woven border and neck trim. Exceptionally large and in perfect condition, this piece features a two-color warp curvilinear snake-like patterned border and a two-color warp zig zag patterned lymi linku neck trim. There are nine multi- colored stripe bands interspersed with ten wide unicolor cochineal dyed bands. Four reverse spun lloq’e stripes on each side were woven into the poncho to ward off evil spirits. The piece was featured in the exhibit, Weaving Traditions, Craft & Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles, 1978. Size: 6'0'' x 6'0'' (183 x 183 cm).
