Description
**Originally Listed At $300**
North America, Midwestern or Eastern, Native American, Civil War Era, ca. 1861 to 1865. A fine sewn-leather cavalry case of tubular form with a circular base and rim, a long body with a rectangular leather handle at its midsection and base, and a looped handle at the top for suspension. All painted in a hue of deep brown, the fine case is adorned with a wavy edge on the leather at its base and a trapezoidal brass badge resembling a coat of arms with a raised circle encased by a shield and surrounded by a phytomorphic motif at its top, opposite the looped handle. Some nicely preserved pigment on the circle indicates that it previously contained a symbol of some sort, perhaps denoting the troop or tribe. Annular iron-nickel alloy buttons secure each handle and the brass adornment to this intriguing artifact. Size: 2.75" W x 18.25" H (7 cm x 46.4 cm)
Many Eastern, Western, and Trans-Mississippian Native Americans participated in the American Civil War as individuals, bands, tribes, and nations, mostly on the side of the Confederacy.
Provenance: private Newport Beach, California, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

Condition
Expected surface wear with chips and cracks to paint and some fraying to opening periphery. Heavy cracks on base commensurate with age and tanning of leather. Wear to metal ornament with missing paint and loss of detail on circle, but nice remaining pigment. Otherwise, very nice with rich patina.
