North America, Midwestern United States, Illinois, Chicago, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A ceremonial fraternal sword by G. F. Foster Son & Co. with a gilt eagle and helmet on the pommel, with a steel blade, wood grip, and matching iron sheath, and gilt brass guard and fittings. The blade has a scrolling foliate pattern that is worn and smooth in areas, the flat ricasso before the guard is marked "G. F. / Foster / Son & Co. / Chicago / Ill." which is slightly rubbed but discernable. G.F. Foster Son & Co offered swords for private and contract sale for both military dress or parade, and paraphernalia for fraternal orders such as the Knights of Pythias and the Order of United Workmen. Size in sheath: 38" L x 4.5" W (96.5 cm x 11.4 cm); blade: 30" L x 0.75" W (76.2 cm x 1.9 cm); gold quality: 5% to 7.7%

Condition
Wear and abrasions to the blade, rubbing to blade motifs, but maker marks are legible. Abrasions to wood grip and fading to gilt pommel eagle and helmet. Paint stains on guard. Sheath is intact and with surface wear and some fading to gilt. Good antique condition.
