Description
Edward Henry Potthast (American 1857 -1927) “Portrait” oil on board, 16” x 12” 1902 From private collector
Edward Potthast (1857 - 1927) was an American landscape painter and illustrator who was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He attended the McMicken School of Design and was a lithography apprentice to Ehgrott Krebs, Co. He had exhibitions in Boston, the Paris Salon, and the Corcoran Gallery Biennials. He worked for the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Brooklyn Institute Museum, and the Hackley Art Gallery.
Potthast is best known for his Impressionist beach scenes featuring women and children playing in the surf. After studying in Paris, he settled in NYC, working as an illustrator for Harper’s and Scribner’s. In the mid 1890’s, he turned seriously to painting figures, landscapes, and seascapes. Around 1914, he began to exhibit the beach scenes for which he became so well known. Executed in bold brushwork, they were painted along the New England coast, often at the artists’ colonies at Rockport, MA, or at Ogunquit, ME.
