Item Details
Description
Michael Lucero (1953; USA)

Totem for the Fifth Day
ca 1983
Earthenware; ht. 103.5 in.

Critic Lucy C. Lippard writes of Lucero that in using Mesoamerican influences in his art he is “aware of the unavoidable intellectual colonization, the confusion of this fusion. Lucero is concerned  ‘to make something that recycles back, that flips the symbol’. He is not so much paying homage to the past as acknowledging its power over him.”  In this monumental work (literally and figuratively) he is also tipping his hat to the totem poles of Northwest Indian’s having studied at the University of Washington, Seattle where he received him MFA in 1978.
