Superb Condition Civil War Kepi Rubberized Canvas Rain Cover/Havelock with period ID along with other personal effects of Jacob I. Whittemore, Co. E, 15th New Hampshire Infantry.Rain cover 20" from bottom of havelock to top of crown. Rather thin rubberized canvas in perfect condition. Small circular metal grommets at both sides 5" from the bottom with the original string for closure at the front. Kepi portion 4 1/2" high at the front. with 1/2 reinforcing all around the base of the portion that would cover the hat. Inside, stenciled in 1" high black ink letters "J. I. W. /E" representing Jacob I Whittemore and Co. E. Also included is a 7" X 8 3/4" burlap bag with wide cotton draw string for closure. Stenciled in 1 1/2" black letters "I. W.". Perfect condition and likely used as a coffee bag. Also a 3" X 4 1/2" booklet with decoratively embossed brown cloth covers with gilt stampings entitled "The Soldier's Pocket Book". Title page with period ink script "J. I. Whittemore/Co. E 15th N. H. V./Manchester." 64 pp. published by the "Presbyterian Board Of Publication for "Defenders Of Our Country". Whittemore enlisted in the 15th New Hampshire on 10/15/62, was wounded at Port Hudson, La. 5/27/63 and mustered out 8/13/63. Great grouping with superb period ID including an extremely rare Civil War uniform accessory in remarkable condition.
