[Bible, Poetical books] Holy Bible: the poetical books of the Bible with five copper plates by renowned artists. Holy Bible [From Job to Malachi]. London, Virtue & C., [without date, but 19th century].

Folio (365x258 mm), 19th century full calf binding, a gilt double fillet frame and a blind-tooled greek surrounding both plates, five raised bands spine with gilt title, fillets and geometrical decorations in gold or blind-tooled to compartments, gilt edges, marbled fly-leaves, pp. 458, [2].

Five full page plates representing scenes taken from the book of Job, the Psalms, from Isaiah and Daniel, engraved from renowned paintings by different artists.
They are The happy days of Job from the work by W. Dobson (1610-1646), an anonimous Jerusalem, Praise ye the Lord! from Praise him with the organs by Domenichino (1581-1641), The daughter of Jerusalem from a painting by the Neapolitan Luca Giordano (1634-1705) and, finally, The fiery furnace from the canvas by G. Jones (1786-1869).

Beautifuk London illustrated edition of the poetical books of the Old Testament, equipped with literary introductions, advices and practical reflections. To the last page, a table lists and explains the Jewish chronological partition and the units of measurement and weight used in the biblical tales in order to make the understanding easier for the modern reader.

Provenance: Handwritten indication to the verso of the first fly-leaf William Stribe given to him by his father in memory of his dear mother. May 20th 1879.
Condition
Slightly worn binding, minor traces of foxing to fly-leaves and few other pages; overall, very good copy.
