Description
Large Washington Co., TN pottery urn attributed to Charles Decker with sine wave incising around the base, pedestal, lower body, and upper shoulder, sine waves separated by incised lines. Impressed triangular stamp design around the circumference of the rim. A similar example is featured on page 12 of the book "The Pottery of Charles F. Decker: A Life Well Made". Redware with applied paint layers. Provenance - DeVault Tavern, Jonesborough, TN. 23 5/8" H. Late 19th century. Note - While several of these monumental urns are featured in early photographs of the Decker pottery, this is one of the first forms to surface. The low survival rate of these monumental urns is likely due to the porous and fragile nature of redware.
Condition
Large triangular section missing from side, approx. 6 1/2" D x 10" W (at the widest point). Chip to the rim.
