Description
Offered for your consideration this Stieff spoon ring in the Betsy Pattern approx size 6 *** Weight: .35 oz. / 9.8 grams *** Measurements: .75 x .75 x .75 ,,, THE HISTORY OF SPOON RINGS ,,, Who was the first person to look at a simple piece of silverware and say ‘yes, I think this would make great ring!’”? Well it turns out that the history of the spoon ring goes back a long way and the story is actually quite romantic and interesting. Spoon rings date back as far as the 1600s in England and were originally thought to represent love, responsibility and commitment. As the story goes, servants who had fallen in love and wanted to propose marriage would steal silver spoons from their masters’ homes and have them crafted into rings. They were too poor to afford any sort of “real” engagement ring, so this was their best alternative to offering a beautiful and valuable ring to the woman they wanted to make their wife. As the idea began to spread, it wasn’t difficult to determine who these servants worked for, (and had stolen from) as the spoons would often be engraved with that particular family’s crest. So as these families reported their silverware missing, it was fairly easy to find the culprit. Needless to say, there were many arrests conducted from the 17th to the 19th century, with offences ranging from “stealing a silver spoon” to “larceny by a servant”. It’s the criminal records that allow us to track just how far back the spoon ring goes, and if we do say so ourselves, what a romantic crime to go down for! Though this particular meaning behind the spoon ring began to diminish towards the beginning of the 19th century, popularity began to spike once more during the 60’s and 70’s. This time however, the draw was more for fashion rather than for love.
