a traveler's toiletries kit, 1st half of the 19th century
A 36-piece traveler's toiletries kit among other things containing two razors, a pocketknife, toothbrushes, razor strop, and much more. It includes a silver box with the Marshall's monogram as well as a clock in a wooden case (not tested for its function). Many implements with ivory handles. Mahogany case, interior lined with gold-stamped Morocco leather. There is a document drawer in the lid behind a mirror. Overlays on the lid (silver, silver plated brass) including a crowned "N". 27 x 19 x 8 cm.
Nicolas-Joseph Maison distinguished himself during the Napoleonic Wars at Jena, Madrid, on the Beresina, and at Leipzig, Later he served Louis XVIII, became Governor of Paris, and commanded the troops stationed there during the Hundred Days. In 1829, he was appointed Marshal. From 1830 on he was especially active in diplomatic service and from 1835 to 1836 occupied the post of Minister of War.
According to the owner's statement, this kit comes from the possession of one of the Marshal's former orderlies.
