[Cartes-de-Visite/Abraham Lincoln]. 2 Cartes-de-Visite of Abraham and Tad Lincoln by Alex. Gardner and E. & H.T. Anthony. Image 3 ¼” x 2 ¼”, mount 2 ¾” x 4”. Provenance: Collection of Walter Stolwein, an amateur photographer, avid collector of photographs and photography equipment and member of the Silver Spring Camera Club and the Chesapeake Antiquarian Photographic Society. ++ Gardner view of Lincoln seated in three-quarter pose and Tad standing opposite, both leaning an arm on a table, against a painted backdrop of half-finished G.W. Monument. Double black border on front, soiling to lower left corner, image clean. Reverse with Gardner’s Capitol building backmark and “ALEX. GARDNER./Photographer to the Army of the Potomac./GALLERIES/511 SEVENTH STREET AND 332 PENNSYLVANIA AV./PUBLISHED BY/PHILP (Sic) & SOLOMONS,/WASHINGTON D.C.” Reverse with soiling to edges, backmark clean. This Lincoln portrait was taken at the sitting of Monday, April 10, 1865 by Gardner. ++ Carte-De-Visite of Abraham Lincoln reading to his son Tad. Image 3 ¾” x 2 ¼” at maximum, unevenly trimmed at bottom and lower left and set crookedly in mount. This image of Lincoln and his son Tad was taken by Anthony Berger at Matthew Brady's Washington studio on February 9, 1864, along with six others the same day, including the "penny" pose and the likeness used on today's five dollar bill. Front has double black borders with all four corners slightly clipped. Reverse with maker’s mark: “Published by E. & H.T. ANTHONY,/501 Broadway,/New York./FROM/PHOTOGRAPHIC NEGATIVE/in/BRADY’S/National Portrait Gallery.” Reverse shows light band of toning at lower edge, light soiling, otherwise clean.
