This Lincoln portrait was taken at the sitting of Monday, April 10, 1865 by Gardner. ++ Carte-De-Visite of Abraham Lincoln reading to his son Tad. Image 3 ¾” x 2 ¼” at maximum, unevenly trimmed at bottom and lower left and set crookedly in mount. This image of Lincoln and his son Tad was taken by Anthony Berger at Matthew Brady's Washington studio on February 9, 1864, along with six others the same day, including the "penny" pose and the likeness used on today's five dollar bill. Front has double black borders with all four corners slightly clipped. Reverse with maker’s mark: “Published by E. & H.T. ANTHONY,/501 Broadway,/New York./FROM/PHOTOGRAPHIC NEGATIVE/in/BRADY’S/National Portrait Gallery.” Reverse shows light band of toning at lower edge, light soiling, otherwise clean.
