[Cartes-de-Visite/Civil War]. 22 Items: 21 Cartes-De-Visite of Union and Confederate Civil War Soldiers and Officers & 1 larger cabinet photograph. CDVs approx. 4" x 2-1/2". 11 portraits marked with variety of maker’s backstamps incl. “O.H. Willard’s New Galleries/1208 Chestnut St./Phila.” “A. Weilepp/No. 19, East Baltimore Street/Baltimore” “Oak Gallery/Memphis, TN” “S.F. Conant/Skowhegan, ME” “J. M. Ingraham’s Art Gallery/Chicago/Cartes De Visite/Only $2.00 per dozen” “Fred Clark/Millersburg, PA” “Barrett/Stoneham, MA” and “Moses and Piffet/Successors to E.J. Jacobs, New Orleans.” Includes 10 unmarked CDVs of soldiers in uniforms sitting and standing posed with rifles, incl. possible unidentified Union General; one with handwritten notation on reverse “This is my Son Emanuel in the army in the 75th (?) at Chattanooga please send this to Elizabeth Bushheimer and to George Hughes and to B(…)” and one with notation “Forster Lyons/Died in the army/1862.” 5 CDVs have US stamps: 4 orange Geo. Washington 2-cent stamps and 1 green GW 3-cent stamp. 2-cent tax stamps were required by law from September 1, 1864 to August 1,1866. Larger photograph of soldier is 6” x 4 ¼”, mounted on original card, image 6” x 4 ¼” with caption on bottom front “Ward/21 SOUTH MAIN STREET, Fall River, Mass.”, with maker’s stamp on reverse. Good to very good, collection has varying degrees of foxing, mostly minor discoloration. 1 with tiny fleck to surface of image. Provenance: Collection of Walter Stolwein, an amateur photographer, avid collector of photographs and photography equipment and member of the Silver Spring Camera Club and the Chesapeake Antiquarian Photographic Society.
