[Carte-de-Viste/Tom Thumb]. 3 mid-1860s Cartes-De-Visite of General Tom Thumb, born Charles Sherwood Stratton, alone and with his wife, Lavinia Warren, and others. ++ One CDV shows subject on front with “Admiral Dot/Thirteen years old; Twenty-five inches high./Weighs only Fifteen pounds” printed below image. Printed on reverse: “Published by E. & H.T. Anthony & Co./591 Broadway, New York./ MANUFACTURERS of the best PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUMS." with a crest with "EA" in center. Subject holding top hat and walking stick and wearing watch chain. Light overall toning & some spotting on front, pencil notation “5.” on reverse. Scratch and minor crease in upper portion of image. ++ Group CDV celebrating the 1863 marriage of Tom Thumb and Livinia Warren. Front reads "The Fairy Wedding Group" above “Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1863 by M.B. Brady in the/Clerk’s Office of the District Court of the So. District of New York.” Reverse with a facsimile signature of each person: "Compliments of Charles S. Stratton, Lavinia Warren Stratton, G.W.M. Nutt and Minnie Warren” above maker’s mark: "Published by/E. & H.T. Anthony/501 Broadway, New York./ MANUFACTURERS of the best PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUMS." with “EA” in central crest. Front of CDV soiled, reverse slightly toned and foxed.++ CDV of General Tom Thumb standing with wife Livinia Warren besides an armchair. Front with double red border, slightly clipped at edges, reverse with “A. MYERS,/SUCCESSOR TO D. W. BOSS,/Main Street, opposite the Post Office./MECHANICSBURG, P.A./Negatives retained.” and “No._____” and in lower right corner a 2-cent cancelled Geo. Washington tax stamp, which was required by law from 9-1-1864 to 8-1-1866. Reverse is clean and bright with “Note Cancellation” in pencil along top edge. Provenance: Collection of Walter Stolwein, an amateur photographer, avid collector of photographs and photography equipment and member of the Silver Spring Camera Club and the Chesapeake Antiquarian Photographic Society.
