Description

Original 1969 "War is Over" Poster
The "War is Over" campaign was originally conceived as a promotional effort in support of John Lennon's song "Happy Xmas (War is Over)." In 1969 the "War is Over! If You Want It" slogan would appear on billboards in eleven cities around the world. In terms of design it was strikingly straightforward, featuring the message "War Is Over!" in large capital case block letters on a white background, with the coda "If You Want It" written in much smaller type below. John Lennon's vocal opposition of the Vietnam War transformed the advertisement into a worldwide campaign for peace, and an indelible image of the social activism Lennon and Ono championed.
