Item Details
Description
An American house circa 1912-1914, this is one of the more desirable houses in the collection as it combines authentic period architectural elements and the allure and intrigue of a true dolls' house. This was most certainly a labor of love as evidenced in the craftsman's attention to nearly every detail. The inviting porch with finely crafted capped balusters, tapered columns and a faux tin roof are enhanced by the appropriate lattice skirting. The clapboard siding is interrupted by ornate wood shingling on side bay window and both gables in three different intricate patterns. A rear opening panel gives play access to the interior where the artists attention to detail continues with carefully mitered baseboards, a center staircase with bullnose treads and banister even though it can barely be fully seen except by a glimpse through the front windows. While there are no walls in the interior division of the rooms is implied by the placement of columns defining the spaces. The walls are unobtrusively papered with simple borders that compliment the lace curtained windows with typical period half shades in green. The furnishings, most of which are also skillfully hand crafted, are augmented by only a few commercial elements and equally time appropriate. Mrs. Jacobs contends (on pages 83-84 of Antique Dolls' Houses, Flora Gill Jacobs © 2005) that this historic time capsule was constructed over a period of 2 years; Although this cataloger suspects more time must have been involved from the careful planning to the execution of this fine structure.
