This charming portrait of a boy is characterized by richness of detail and great expressive power
The present sitter has traditionally been identified with Johann II Kasimir, the King of Poland (1609-1672). It is likely to be the work of a painter active in the circle of the court painter Jakob Troschel (1583-1624), and it could possibly be a copy of an official commission. Johann II Kasimir was the second son of the King of Poland, Sigismund III, and ascended the throne of Poland in 1648. The present portrait characterized by richness of detail and great expressive power.
The painting is in visually appealing condition, showing some wear marks. The canvas has been relined. The paint surface shows light framing marks, paint losses mainly in the lower parts. Some older retouchings in the face and the right shoulder of the sitter and a few tiny touch ups can be found. The gilded ornate frame is in good condition, showing only minor wear. The overall dimensions, including the frame, are 88 x 69 cm. The stretcher frame measures 72 x 57.5 cm.
Jakob Troschel (1583-1624)
Born in Nuremberg, the painter Jakob Troschel studied with Johann Juvenel and Alex Lindner. Due to the great success of his art, he became court painter to the king of Poland, Sigismund III, in Krakow, where he worked until 1624.
