This painting was created by the Swiss born painter Carl Christoph Hartig, who used to belong to the Düsseldorf School of Painting. This piece depicts the village of Lugano in the canton of Ticino with its beautiful architecture and mountain scenery. On the left side the shores of Lake Lugano is still visible. Standing on a terrace, the observer catches a romantic view over Lugano with the San Lorenzo Cathedral arising on the left side. Based on bright and gentle impressionistic colors, influenced by Cézanne, Hartig developed eventually his very own style, still slightly in the manner of scale painting.
The painting is signed lower left ‘C. C. Hartig’. It is verso at the left inscribed with the date ‘1934’ on the bent side of the canvas and is overall in very good condition with minor signs of age and wear. The frame shows slight signs of use as well. The dimensions of the stretcher are 54 x 65 cm. Framed the painting measures 74 x 85 cm.
Carl Christoph Hartig (1888-1975)
Carl Christoph Hartig was born 1888 in Davos, Switzerland. He studied from 1903-1909 at the Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie and the Kunstgewerbeschule in Aachen as well as under Ludwig von Hofmann and Hans Olde at the Art School in Weimar. Hartig worked in many different artistic styles of the modern art. Originally coming from the impressionism, influenced by the artist Cézanne in Paris, he also shows influences of the expressionist Fauves and Cubists from whom he eventually created his very own style.
