This expressive woodcut ‘Schwarzes Tuch III’ (= black cloth III) by the famous German artist Georg Baselitz was created in 1989. It is the copy number 41 from an edition of 50 prints. Influenced by the Art Brut, the Informel and Abstract Expressionism, the work of Georg Baselitz is characterized by an Expressionist ductus and abstract depictions.


The woodcut by Georg Baselitz is in very good condition with slight handling creases. The depiction is 65 x 49 cm in size and the dimensions of the sheet are 78.5 x 63.5 cm.



Georg Baselitz (born 1938)

Georg Baselitz, actually Hans-Georg Kern, was born in Upper Lusatia. In 1956 he began to study painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in East Berlin. He was soon expelled and continued his studies in West Berlin, where he studied the theories of Kandinsky, Malevich and Nay and became interested in the art of the ‘mentally ill’. In 1961 he adopted the pseudonym Georg Baselitz. In 1970 the first exhibition with exclusively ‘inverted’ paintings took place in a gallery in Cologne. With his frequently provocative works Baselitz played a significant role in modern painting of post-war Germany. In 1977 he accepted a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, in the 1980s and 90s he taught at the University of Arts in Berlin. His works are in the collection of the Guggenheim Museum and MoMA in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Berlinische Galerie as well as the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin.
