Description
Scabbard inscribed "Presented to Edward Lounsbery First Lieutenant. Company B 179th Regiment. New York Volunteers by the members of his company Petersburgh, Virginia. February 10, 1865." Lounsbery enlisted August 31, 1864 at Caroline, NY as a private, on October 1, 1864 he mustered into "B" company NY 179th infantry. He was promoted to 1st LT. October 9th, 1864. He mustered out June 8, 1865 at Alexandria, VA. The 179th saw continuous action at Petersburg from June 1864 until April 1865. Where 24 were killed, 51 wounded, 36 POW and 20 missing. It is unusual to find a sword presented in the field under battle conditions. Sword retains original sword knot. Figural silver grip. Reverse of grip has applied brass emblem. Sword is missing pommel. Heavily decorated guard with drum, cannon, shield, and flags. Clauberg blade with patriotic acid etched decorated. Blade marked iron-proof. Blade also marked J.C.F.D New York. Likely the name of an unidentified jeweler. Lower half of blade shows some pitting and discoloration. Interestingly the only other version of this grip I have seen (sold by Cowans) was also missing the pommel. Blade length 32"
