Description

Anthony McAuliffe (1898-1975) General. McAuliffe was the acting division commander of the 101st Airborne Division troops defending Bastogne, Belgium, during World War II's Battle of the Bulge. He is famous for his single-word reply of â€œNuts!â€ in response to a German surrender ultimatum. After the Battle of the Bulge, he was given command of his own division, the 103rd Infantry Division, which he led from January 1945 to July 1945, after the war in Europe ended. 8â€ x 10 Â½â€ typed letter signed, Joint Task Force One, July 11, 1946, to Ashley T. Cole. â€œâ€¦I am busily engaged in the tests of the atomic bomb. The second test is tentatively scheduled for July 25thâ€¦I shall be glad to accede to your request but suggest that you wait until my returnâ€¦.â€
