1826 Maryland Document Confirming “FREE-BORN” Status of Two Mulatto Women
September 2, 1826-Dated Manuscript Document Confirming the Free-Born Status of Two Mulatto Women, Frederick County, Maryland, Choice Very Fine.
This original Manuscript Document measures 8.5” x 4.75” being very nicely written in deep brown ink on white period wove paper. Document Signed by George Roberts, Justice of the Peace, attesting that Eleanor Brooks and Mary Wheaton had been born free. It reads in full; “On this 2nd day of September 1826 personally appears Daniel Emory before the subscriber a Justice of the Peace in and for said County and made oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God that he doth know both Eleanor Brooks and Mary Wheaton the two Mulatto women now in my presence were born free. - Sworn Before - George Roberts.” It is also docketed on the blank reverse; “Attest of - Daniel Emory - filed 2nd Sept. - 1826”. A very rare and unusual legal documentation a being Free Born.
