1867 Pension Document for Service in the Colored Troops
July 27, 1867-Dated Post Civil War Era, Partly-Printed Pension Document, for Service in the Colored Troops 41st Infantry, Baltimore, Maryland, Very Fine.
An original Civil War Pension Payment, 1 page, 8" x 3.5". This document reads, "Maryland Pension-Eighty Dollars Per Annum, Payable Quarterly, in Equal Installments. / $20 Baltimore, July 27th, 1867 / The Treasurer of the State of Maryland, / Pay to the Order of Nicholas Brewer the sum of Twenty Dollars for one quarter's Pension (of $80) due me under the act of the General Assembly of Maryland of 1867." Signed by a number of witnesses and endorsed on reverse, "Nicholas Brewer". Orange 2 cent Internal Revenue Bankcheck Stamp affixed at left side also hand cancelled with a July 27, 1867 written date. This soldier served in the 41st Infantry Regiment which was made up by African American soldiers and white officers. They engaged in the Siege of Petersburg and Appomattox Campaign, and were present at the surrender of Lee at Appomattox. Very scarce. Ex: Russ & Jane Sears Maryland Collection.
