Description
An attractive Late Roman bronze lamp, c. 5th - 6th Century AD, the rounded body with nozzle ending in dished circular wick-hole, raised rim around the filling hole with hinge-piece at rear, the lid in the form of a detailed female face. At back is a double, triangular-sectioned, rod handle, curving upward and terminating in a stylized female mask, behind the mask is a hooked lug. The base is raised and circular, with a square hole for a pricket stand, rounded conical sleeve within the filling chamber. L: 5 ½ in (13.9cm). Intact and a very nice example! Cf. Bailey, Catalogue of Lamps in the British Museum, Vol. IV, London, 1996, no. Q3811 and M. Dunand, Fouilles de Byblos I, Paris, 1937, pl. LIV, 1167 for a very close parallels; Ex German private collection.
