Description
A choice Roman ceramic lamp with theatre mask, 2nd century AD, extremely well detailed, the mouth open wide, the body of the lamp round with short rounded nozzle, the narrow flat shoulders set off from the deeply concave discus by molded grooves, ring handle at rear, raised disk base on bottom. L: 3 7/8" (9.8 cm). Well-preserved brown slip. Ex property from the collection of Joseph Klein (1899-1987), New York City. Mr. Klein sought out and acquired these souvenirs as part of his vast collecting interests. Said to have collected in the manner of an 18th century connoisseur, his overall collection showcased his diverse array of artifacts acquired over a period of 45 years and included the art of ancient China, Egypt, Persia, Greece and Rome
