Item Details
Description
A Guatemalan wood dance mask representing a Spaniard, Totonicapán, Yucatan, Spanish Colonial Period, painted and signed ‘S’. L: 6 ½ in (16.5 cm). Signe of use. Collected in Totonicapán, Yucatan. Ex Peter Bartlett, West Hollywood. The masked dances of Mexico are famous for the sheer number and variety of roles and masks are produced in most of the Mexican states. In Guatemala, as in Mexico, the makers produce masks for the dance and also maintain them, making repairs as needed and often repainting or repurposing them for the various roles as necessary, as the dancers takes their roles very seriously. We refer those with interest to the work by Lechuga & Sayer (1995), Mask Arts of Mexico, for more information.
