John Lennon "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night" Champagne Glasses And Memorabilia (1974). Beatles founder and co-leader John Lennon scored his first Billboard #1 album in 1971 with Imagine, but by 1974, still didn't have a #1 single. That all changed with "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night" off his second #1 album Walls and Bridges. It was an exciting, even giddy moment for Lennon when he arrived in Los Angeles to get the Billboard award. As Capitol Records executive Bruce Wendell tells it, "I picked up John at the hotel... the bar in the limo was very well stocked with the finest imported champagne and liquors." But only plastic glasses were present. John "looked at me and said, 'let's go and get some good glasses.' Obligingly, Wendell stopped the limo at Lalique on N. Rodeo Drive, for John to run in for a quick purchase of three glasses, which were used a short time later to toast Lennon's first #1 single. Each beautiful, simply but ornately designed glass measures 7" tall, and according to Wendell, were used on only the one momentous occasion. Also included is an 11" x 13.5" plaque of Wendell's recounted history, six 6" x 4" and four 6" x 8" black and white photos of the occasion, plus a Mint copy of the single with picture sleeve.
