Impressive large Weimar vase featuring a high quality veduta painting; an interesting documentation of Berlin’s history

This vase with cover by the royal porcelain manufactory KPM impresses with its rich gold decoration. The royal blue ground of this so-called Weimar vase is lined with a gold contoured frieze partly in relief. The front shows the colored depiction of the Berlin City Palace as viewed from the Lange Brücke in a gold frame. The finest veduta painting was created after an etching by Friedrich August Schmidt and a drawing by Johann Hubert Anton Forst.

The vase was once owned by Leopold IV. Friedrich, Duke of Anhalt-Dessau (1794-1871) and was made between 1849 and 1870 (pfennig mark).

The vase is in perfect condition. The underside bears the following marks: underglaze blue scepter and pfennig mark as well as the on glaze red orb mark for polychrome painting. It has a total height of 52 cm.

Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin

The Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin is one of the oldest and most famous porcelain manufacturers in the world. It was founded by Frederick the Great in 1763, after there had already been several attempts to bring the production of the ‘white gold’ to Berlin. In 1871 the company moved to its current location near the Tiergarten. During the 19th century KMP was a leading manufacturer of porcelains with fine veduta painting. In addition to extravagantly painted vases a myriad of table sets and figurative porcelain has been produced over the years. To this today all porcelain is crafted almost entirely by hand and adorned with hand-painted decorations. The style-defining KPM designs can be found in the collections of many major museums.
