Antique cup from a pre-Roman civilization
The present Etruscan bronze cup dates back to the 3rd or 4th century BC. It is of cylindrical form with an everted rim and splayed foot and features an excellent patina. The slender handle terminates in a Janus head applique. In ancient Roman religion and myth the god Janus was the protector of the home (ianua=door). An antique collectible of museum-quality!
The cup is in a state of preservation consistent with age. Cracks have been professionally restored. It measures 16.5 cm in height.
