Nobuyoshi Araki is undoubtedly one of the most radical and influential photographers of our time. Extraordinarily productive and innovative in his oeuvre, he is considered one of the most important figures on the contemporary art scene – far beyond the genre of potography. He regularly causes controversy by exploring topics of sexuality and death that are largely taboo, often in a provocative manner.
However, Araki’s controversial nudes and intimate studies of the female body are only a part of his extensive canon of motifs, with which the artist describes a world in which life, death and sexuality are entwined and merged, life leading inexorably to death and death to new life. The present photograph depicts one of Araki’s favourite models, with whom he worked for many years.
His cycles LIFE BY LEICA and LOVE BY LEICA are now being continued and also completed with LAST BY LEICA, a work currently on view at the Viennese gallery OstLicht as part of the exhibition ARAKI TELLER,TELLER ARAKI.
