Description
Wood and lacquer with gold. Japan, 19th century
Exceptionally finely crafted and outstanding work in the style of a Hako netsuke, in the form of a box or jewel case. On the bottom of the lid is a loop through which the cord is threaded. Oval form with extraordinarily fine lacquer painting. On the body of the container are partially stylized flowering kiri (paulownia). The lid presents waves in takamaki-e with floating golden chrysanthemums; a reference to the imperial mon (armor) and the legend of the “chrysanthemum boys” Kikujido, who threw kiku flowers into the river. The bottom of a hyotan (bottleneck squash) reveals the signature with a golden character SAI.
LENGTH 3,8 CM
