Speed is known to have used the most current sources available for this famous compilation, and his county maps are notable for their contemporaneousness and completeness, as well as for the inclusion of detailed insets showing city plans, important buildings, coats-of-arms, battle scenes, and archaeological remains. This map features an inset showing a plan of the fortified city of Durham, and another depicting the Battle of Nevil's Cross, which was fought between the English and the Scots. Embellishments include the royal arms of Britain and an ornate compass rose. On verso, two-page text in English includes a full-page alphabetical index of places, and a full-page description of ''The Bishopricke of Durham.'' Size: Approx. 15'' x 19.9'' (38.1 x 50.5 cm) Color: Hand-colored engraving. Condition: Map is toned with some staining, soiling, and a reinforced center fold; in margin, foxing, browning, some tearing, loss to the lower corners, and notations handwritten in pencil; on verso, a pair of adhesive mounts remain attached at top left and right.
