Cartographer: John Speed Title: The Countie of Nottingham described The Shire Townes Situation and the Earls thereof observed Subject: Nottingham, England Published: London: Roger Rea the Elder and Younger Date: 1665 Description: Rare Roger Rea imprint of Speed's English county map of Nottingham. The map, dated 1610 by Dutch engraver Jodocus Hondius, first appeared in Speed's 1610-1 edition of The Theatre Of The Empire Of Great Britaine. Speed is known to have used the most current sources available for this famous compilation, and his county maps are notable for their contemporaneousness and completeness, as well as for the inclusion of detailed insets showing city plans, important buildings, coats-of-arms, battle scenes, and archaeological remains. This map features a large inset showing a plan of the city of Nottingham. Another inset shows eight coats-of-arms representing ''The Armes of such honorable Familyes, as have borne the title of Earles of Nottingham.'' Embellishments include the royal arms of Britain, figural decoration, and an ornate compass rose. On verso, two-page text in English includes a full-page alphabetical index of places, and a full-page description of Nottingham. Size: Approx. 15'' x 20'' (38.1 x 50.8 cm) Color: Hand-colored engraving. Condition: On map, center fold, with light toning and soiling; in margin, creasing, occasional chipping and tearing, and a notation handwritten in pencil at top left; on verso, three adhesive mounts remain attached at top left and right.
